West Ham are understood to be involved in a game of cat and mouse over a new deal being sought by Declan Rice’s advisers. The player still has a year left on his currrent contract and negotiations are at a standstill, whilst the defender considers his international future – whether to play for England or Republic of Ireland at senior level.
Rice’s representatives are believed to be seeking a £30,000 a week deal but the Hammers remain locked into an offer of closer to £20,000 a week plus appearance clauses, which could take him to the £30k wanted.
There have been no further talks between the parties in recent weeks, but there is no panic with the Hammers determined to do all they can to keep hold of the 19-year-old.
The centre-back comes to the end of his current deal next June, but the club have an option in their favour for him to remain at the London Stadium for a further 12 months.
Currently the stand-off is typical of such situations and until his international future is finally settled, the wage talks are on the back burner.
