Moura Missing For Spurs Semi-Final

Lucas Moura has been ruled out for Tottenham’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea but Erik Lamela is set to return.

Moura will be missing from Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for the visit of the Blues to Wembley on Tuesday after he damaged his knee in Spurs’ 7-0 romp against Tranmere in the FA Cup third round on Friday.

He joins Eric Dier (appendicitis), Mousa Dembele (ankle) and Victor Wanyama (knee) in being unavailable for the tie with all three men still working their way back to fitness.

The good news is that Lamela should be in the matchday squad after recovering from illness, while Jan Vertonghen could also make his return following a hamstring injury.

Pochettino is set to field a strong line-up for the semi-final first leg but has confirmed there will be a change in goal with Paulo Gazzaniga set to start ahead of regular No.1 Hugo Lloris.

Ahead of the semi-final, Pochettino called on his players to show they have learnt how to match the best teams in the country, claiming they still have yet to prove they can fight dirty when necessary.

“We are a team everyone likes to watch over the last three or four years but we need to be a little bit naughty, smart in how we compete, and we still miss that,” Pochettino said.

“Football is about being a little bit smart and naughty. It’s a mix in between the two. “If you want to win titles and be consistent, you do not only need to play well with quality. Being competitive is about being tough in some games.

We have the opportunity now against Chelsea and in the next few months to show we’re capable of being more competitive than we were.”
