Murphy Revels In Nassau Shock

Oisin Murphy described his shock win on Deidre in the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes as a “dream come true”. The five-year-old was sent off around the 20/1 mark with Frankie Dettori and Mehdaayih expected to dominate the race. All looked to be going to plan before Deirdre darted up the rail and stayed on to pip the front runner by a length and a half, with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Rawdaa third.

Connections of the Mitsuru Hashida-trained star had their doubts after he struggled on softer ground in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes but the firmer ground suited as she claimed her maiden Group 1 on these shores. Murphy was understandably thrilled with the performance and praised the work done by Hashida in preparing her for a Glorious Goodwood victory. The 23-year-old said: “This is a dream come true and a massive day for Japan. I’m delighted to have done the steering. I’m absolutely thrilled that all the hard work has been rewarded.”
