No Gerrard Approach From Magpies

Newcastle have yet to approach Glasgow Rangers about Steven Gerrard becoming Rafael Benitez’s successor, according to reports. There has been strong speculation over the weekend that the Magpies had enquired about taking the 39-year-old former Liverpool and England captain to St James’ Park off the back of Benitez’s departure at the start of the month.

It was claimed the Gers rebuffed the approach and Gerrard stressed that he was happy to remain at Ibrox as he looks to build on his first season in charge when he guided the Dark Blues to second spot behind champions Celtic. But The Times has said that Newcastle have not made any offer to Rangers about taking Gerrard as their search for a new manager continues.

The situation on Tyneside is clouded by the possibility of Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan buying out current owner Mike Ashley at some point. It’s believed that Jose Mourinho could be the man the club approach if that deal finally gets the go-ahead.
