Matt O’Connor has paid the price for Leicester’s opening defeat to Exeter and been removed from his position as Tigers’ head coach. The 47-year-old returned to Welford Road for a second stint in charge in March 2017, following the sacking of Richard Cockerill as director of rugby in January of that year.
He guided the East Midlands outfit to fifth in last season’s Premiership but was unable to inspire his charges at the weekend as they opened their account with a crushing 40-6 defeat at Sandy Park.
Leicester have opted to take immediate action, with assistant coach Geordan Murphy taking charge of team affairs on an interim basis.
Chairman Peter Tom CBE said: “Matt was appointed head coach in April 2017 on the basis of his previous Premiership experience and his knowledge of the club.
“But we believe the time is right to make this change in the best interests of the Tigers moving forward.
“We would like to thank Matt for his hard work and commitment to the club in two spells at Welford Road, and we wish him and his family well for the future.”
