Angelo Ogbonna says Sunday’s 4-0 loss to Liverpool has not knocked his belief that West Ham will have an improved 2018/19 season. The Hammers were second best all over the park at Anfield as the Reds ran riot to inflict a heavy defeat on Manuel Pellegrini’s new-look side, the Chilean handing debuts to Jack Wilshere, Felipe Anderson, Fabian Balbuena, Lukasz Fabiański and Ryan Fredericks from the start, while Andriy Yarmolenko came off the bench.
The quintet were part of 10 additions made to the squad at the London Stadium during the summer as the club look to avoid another battle with relegation.
Ogbonna, who is starting his fourth season at West Ham, believes this is the best squad assembled since he moved to the capital and says Sunday’s loss to Liverpool was just a blip, insisting there is no cause for concern.
He said: “Liverpool is a good team who want to compete this season, and there are not a lot of negatives to talk about because it is the first game and I think we showed that we have quality.
“We had our chances in the first half, but we didn’t score, and they were clinical with their chances
“The second goal was crucial, because we were really close to getting in at half time at 1-0 and we didn’t want to concede the goal at that time.
“But we’ve got a long season and we have very positive things to talk about. We have a really good dressing room, we have signed good players and I saw good things on Sunday. We have to be positive.”
