O’Loughlin To Miss Great Britain Tour

Sean O’Loughlin will not be a part of Great Britain’s squad for their tour of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea due to injury. The Wigan forward has been absent for most of the 2019 season due to a pectoral injury and was unable to help guide them to the Super League Grand Final after losing at home to Salford.

The tour, which consists of games against Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and a double-header against New Zealand, was supposed to bring down the curtain on O’Loughlin’s international career, where he won 11 Great Britain caps and a further 25 for England.

However, it has been decided that he would be better having a summer to recuperate and get ready for the 2020 season with Wigan. RFL Director of Rugby Kevin Sinfield says the decision made was in everyone’s interests. “Both Wayne Bennett and Sean discussed and agreed that it was best for him to miss the tour this year,” Sinfield said.

“He’s been an outstanding leader of the team on and off the field, with the ability to play in any position, and his combination of skill and toughness. It was important that I spoke to him and we agreed on an outcome, and hopefully it will help him come back fresh next season.”
