Ospreys Sign Springboks Scrum-Half

The Ospreys have agreed a deal to sign South African Shaun Venter from Cheetahs, subject to clearance. The 32-year-old has been with the Cheetahs in his homeland since 2014 but is now set to test himself in British rugby. The experienced scrum half, who has also had spells with both the Pumas and Southern Kings, has penned a two-year deal with the Pro 14 outfit.

Venter has never been capped for the full Springboks team but has played for his country as part of their rugby sevens side. He is a versatile player who can also fill in at full back, centre or on the wing, which he did for much of his early career, before settling into the scrum half role.

Venter is set to replace long-serving Tom Habberfield, who is joining the Cardiff Premiership club side. Meanwhile, the Ospreys are hopeful out-of-contract Welsh star Alun Wyn Jones will stay at the club beyond the World Cup, despite him being linked with a switch to Bristol in the Gallagher Premiership.
