Owen Backs Greenwood For England

Former Manchester United and England forward Michael Owen says Mason Greenwood is destined to play for the Three Lions.

Greenwood started his first senior game for United on Thursday evening as they laboured past Kazakhstan outfit Astana 1-0 in the Europa League.

The 17-year-old got the only goal of the game after some neat footwork in the box was matched by a smart finish from a narrow angle.

He has been a regular fixture since pre-season and has featured in many squads this season, mainly being utlilised from the bench.

Greenwood has already been involved with the England set-up at various youth levels and, despite his age, he debuted for the Under-21’s in the recent international break as he came off the bench in their game against Turkey.

Owen, who broke into the England squad at a similar age says Greenwood will be in definite contention if he starts playing more regularly at Old Trafford. “He’ll have a part to play in the Premier League, no question,” Owen said on BT Sport.

“His goal record at youth level is phenomenal. In my mind he’s going to be a proper Manchester United player for a long, long time. He’s doing this on a weekly basis, playing with these players.

He’s desperate now to start with the big boys. “As soon as he starts playing regularly for Manchester United he’ll be in the England squad.”
