Benjamin Mendy has been urged to stay off social media and focus on his football – and the Manchester City star says he will.
Despite so far spending the majority of his City career sidelined by injury, the French World Cup winner has become a cult hero with fans due to his comedic Twitter and Instagram contributions.
Mendy was back in the City team which beat Arsenal 2-0 in their first Premier League game of the season on Sunday but afterwards his boss Pep Guardiola revealed his frustration with the full-back, who he felt was often found in the wrong position during the game.
Guardiola said: “Mendy is Mendy. Sometimes we want to kill him and sometimes you think, ‘wow, what a player we have’.
“He gives us energy. Mendy has a lot of things to improve and hopefully we can convince him to forget a little bit the social media and improve a few things.”
In typical style, Mendy duly responded on Twitter, initially saying “oops” and then vowing: “I will, I promise”.
Mendy also posted a picture on Instagram of him with musician Noel Gallagher, the celebrity City fan, formerly of the band Oasis.
