Piercy Delighted With Minnesota Start

Scott Piercy said he was happy to go low on day one of the 3M Open after building an early two-shot lead. World number 58 Piercy made nine birdies in a bogey-free round to sign for a brilliant 62, leaving him two strokes clear of Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and Canada’s Adam Hadwin.

The 40-year-old American, who is searching for his fifth PGA Tour title, knew there would be some low scores to kick things off and he is glad he managed to start off so positively. “You always get one or two guys go really low and I just happened to be that guy,” he told Sky Sports.

“I was thinking [pre-round] four or five under a day would be nice.” American trio Brian Harman, Patton Kizzire and Sam Saunders, South Korean Sungjae Im and Indian Arjun Atwal are in a five-way share of fourth on -6, three shots off the lead. US pair Tony Finau and Bryson DeChambeau heads a group of nine players that are a further stroke back on -5, while world number one Brooks Koepka is in a 13-way tie for 18th on -4.
