Powell Wary Of Gaskell Threat

Castleford Tigers coach Daryl Powell feels stopping Lee Gaskell will be key to victory in Sunday’s Super League clash with Huddersfield Giants. The Tigers head to the John Smith’s Stadium sitting in sixth spot in the standings, with the Giants down in 10th and it looks set to be a tough encounter in west Yorkshire.

The last time the sides met it was Cas who prevailed 27-26 back in June, with Gaskell bagging a hat-trick of tries on that occasion. It was not the first time that the 28-year-old had shone against the Tigers and Powell is clearly wary of just what he can do when given time and space.

“Lee Gaskell played well against us last time and you’ve just got to try to stop him running,” he said. “If you sit off he’s a very dangerous player, his running game is his biggest threat. He’s a smart player and he’s a player I’ve always liked, his running game in particular.

“He’s tall, rangy, quick and strong and you need to be aware of what he’s going to try to do.” The former Featherstone coach believes that Gaskell’s team-mates could also cause problems this weekend, adding: “Some of the things Huddersfield do in attacking positions is very dangerous and we’re going to have to defend well against them.”
