Rashid Spins England To T20 Win

Adil Rashid produced a masterful bowling performance as England beat Sri Lanka by 30 runs in the one-off T20 in Colombo. Having been thrashed in the final match of the recent ODI series, England were looking for a response in the shortest format of the game and that is exactly what the tourists got as they made an impressive 187-8.

Opener Jason Roy top-scored for the tourists with 69 from 36 balls, while some late hitting from Moeen Ali (27) and Joe Denly (20) helped Eoin Morgan’s men set a challenging target.

Amila Aponso and Lasith Malinga both took two wickets for the hosts but only the latter had an economy rate of less than 8.00, highlighting the poor bowling performance.

Sri Lanka made a dreadful start to their reply with both opening batsmen, Niroshan Dickwella (3) and Kusal Mendis (1), bowled by Denly inside the first three overs to leave the home side 16-2.

Dinesh Chandimal (26), Dhananjaya de Silva (17) and Kamindu Mendis (24) did what they could to get their side back in the game but the trio all fell to spinner Rashid, who finished with figures of 3-11 from his four overs.

Dasun Shanaka (10) and Isuru Udana (2) were next to fall off the bowling of Liam Plunkett and Chris Jordan respectively, with the hosts still requiring 69 runs to win from 26 balls.

Aponso was then dismissed for a two-ball duck after a brilliant yorker from Jordan before Denly grabbed the final two wickets of Lasith Malinga (5) and captain Thisara Perera (57) to bowl Sri Lanka out for 157.
