Redmond Reaping Rewards For Saints Changes

Nathan Redmond says a change of approach off the field and regular chats with Mark Hughes have helped him become a Southampton regular. The 24-year-old was left on the periphery of the Saints first-team after Hughes took over last March, missing out on several match-day squads towards the end of last season.

However, this term, Redmond is one of a handful of players to have featured in every Premier League game for Southampton so far this season, putting in some creditable performances during a tricky start to the campaign.

The former Norwich man has now revealed how he worked himself back into contention with Hughes in charge, admitting he had to make changes behind the scenes to ensure he was able to meet his manager’s demands.

“I was left out of the squad a lot last year and I think there were one or two games I wasn’t in the squad when the gaffer [Mark Hughes] came in,” he tokd the Daily Echo.

“I think he realised I wasn’t in a great moment. But I had a conversation with him just before I came back – after he was appointed – and I’ve been continuously talking to him every day to get a feel of what he wants from me.

“It’s been a positive start to the season for me but at the end of the day there is a lot of work that needs to be done as it’s the team that matters.”
