Rhinos Lining Up Demetriou As Coach

Leeds Rhinos are reportedly looking to lure former Wakefield Trinity second-row Jason Demetriou back to England as their head coach. The Rhinos have had a disastrous season in Super League and currently sit joint-bottom of the table with promoted London Broncos.

They hired former player Dave Furner in the last close season as they looked to regain their mojo following the dismantling of the 2015 treble-winning squad and staff. However, they had a terrible start to the season and Furner was dismissed in early May after taking charge of just 14 games.

He was replaced on a temporary basis by Richard Agar but results have not improved and now they are in serious danger of being relegated to the Championship.

Demetriou is currently the assistant coach at South Sydney Rabbitohs, ironically where Furner was brought in from for his Rhinos coaching spell, but has indicated he would be happy to go back to England if the right opportunity arose as he still owns a house in West Yorkshire.

The report does not specify whether he would be appointed now or for the start of the 2020 season. Demetriou has had huge backing from elsewhere, with England coach Warren Bennett thought to be a big fan of his compatriot’s coaching abilities.
