Rojo Pushing For Fener Switch

Marcos Rojo is reportedly ‘looking forward’ to joining Fenerbahce as he seeks to bring the curtain down on his stint at Manchester United.

The Argentine finds himself right at the bottom of the pecking order for centre-halfs at Old Trafford and his chances of first-team football this season look very slim.

The £80million capture of Harry Maguire from Leicester City means boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has seven centre-backs to choose from and is unlikely to turn to Rojo.

Maguire and Victor Lindelof have quickly established themselves as Solskjaer’s first-choice pairing at the heart of United’s defence with youngster Axel Tuanzebe playing back-up to the duo.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are also pushing for inclusion, while Eric Bailly is still to be factored in when he recovers from injury.

It has been clear to Rojo for some time that he needs to move on if he wants to play regular first-team football and he had been set for a move to Everton towards the end of the English transfer window.

It is understood Everton had agreed a loan deal with United for Rojo, with the option to make his stay at Goodison Park permanent come the end of this season.

However, it is understood United co-owners Joel and Avram Glazer pulled the plug on the move as they viewed Everton as a direct rival, a move which left Rojo ‘fuming’ with the club.

The South American is now set to get his wish with talks between the Red Devils and Fenerbahce said to be at an advanced stage.

Reports from Turkey claim Rojo is Fener’s first choice to improve their defensive line and that the former Sporting man is keen to go to Istanbul.

A stumbling block could prove to be the wages of Rojo with the Turkish outfit not willing to match what he is currently earning at Old Trafford.

Rojo has been in Manchester for five years having been signed for £16million from Sporting and will leave having won an FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

Rojo might not be the only centre-half to leave United this season with Chris Smalling having been the subject of speculation during the summer.

Much like Rojo, Smalling is down Solskjaer’s pecking order and was wanted by Everton on loan towards the end of the transfer window.

The Red Devils rejected that possibility and are said to be looking for an offer in the region of £30million before they consider selling the England international.
