Root – We Can Play Spin

England Test skipper Joe Root says the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka will prove the players do not have a problem coping with spin. Slow bowling has long been a problem for England’s batsman but Root thinks the tour of Sri Lanka, which has so far been ruined by the rain, will give them the chance to show that they can play spin.

One thing is for certain they are going to see plenty of slow bowling over the next seven weeks of their tour with the ODI’s resuming on Saturday and the Test matches starting next month, but Root says it is an opportunity to show what they can do.

He told the Mail: “I think we’ve certainly got it in us. There’s been signs of that and as a team, our record against spin is right up there, if not the best in the world over the last couple of years.

“This is another opportunity to show everyone how good we are against spin and to perform well on these surfaces.
“To do that it’s important to understand the rhythm of batting here is very different to back home. The way we structure setting a target or chasing one down might be very different to how we go about it at home.”
