Rummenigge Plays Down Duo Interest

CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has played down reports claiming Bayern Munich are considering moves for Julen Lopetegui or Erik ten Hag. The future of current Bayern boss Niko Kovac remains uncertain despite the fact he is on course to deliver both the Bundesliga title and German Cup in his first season in charge at the Allianz Arena.

Rummenigge hinted that Kovac must bring some success to the club this term, although he rebuffed talk of the club making a move to bring in former Real Madrid and Spain coach Lopetegui after reports he had met with Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

He said: “I don’t think that the meeting happened. I don’t know him well enough, I have to say quite openly and honestly. I haven’t followed him very much, neither with the [Spanish] national team nor at Real Madrid. We have never yet discussed that topic of coach at Bayern Munich.”

Ten Hag, who has guided Ajax to the Dutch Cup, the brink of the Eredivisie title and the semi-finals of the Champions League this season, has also been linked, but Rummenigge hinted that he could be a target further down the line. He added: “Ajax is playing a refreshing brand of soccer. I’m happy for Erik; he was with us for a couple of years [with Bayern II, 2013-2015], is a nice guy. “Whether he’s someone for the future? I don’t know.”
