Sagan Targets US Glory

Peter Sagan is targeting a return to winning ways at the Tour of California and says he has been happy with his form in 2019. The 29-year-old has had a difficult start to the year after being struck down by illness which immediately put him on the back foot and resulted in him picking up just the one win.

Despite pulling the plug on his Classics campaign early after failing to land a podium, the Slovakian has taken the positives from the year as he prepares to embark on the seven-day WorldTour race in the US. Sagan won the Tour of California in 2015 and holds the race record of 16 stage wins, something he hopes to add to this week.

“The results don’t tell you everything,” Sagan said. “After being sick in the spring, I was rather weak, and when I was better I immediately returned to racing, which didn’t do me any good. “But it is cycling, no one will wait for you. I lost a few weeks of training and it was what it was. On the other hand, I was still fighting for victory in Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, or was at least at the front. That’s why I rate it positively.”
