Southampton have reportedly rejected Stoke’s swoop for Sam Gallagher, while Aston Villa want defender Matt Targett on loan. Potters boss Gary Rowett is eager to strengthen his attacking options before the loan window closes at the end of the month and he was believed to have identified former England Under-20 international Gallagher as a target.
However, Stoke, whose 10-year stay in the Premier League was ended last season after suffering relegation, will have to turn their attention elsewhere after the Saints have reportedly rejected the Championship outfit’s advances.
Southampton boss Mark Hughes wants to keep the 22-year-old, who spent the previous campaign on loan at Birmingham City, as back-up to Danny Ings, Charlie Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long.
Meanwhile, Stoke’s Championship rivals Aston Villa are thought to be plotting a swoop to sign full-back Targett before the loan window closes on August 31.
The 22-year-old helped Fulham secure automatic promotion to the Premier League last season and they failed with a £15million bid to make the move permanent in the summer transfer window.
Targett has yet to figure in Hughes’ plans this season and Villa boss Steve Bruce is keen to take him to Villa Park for the season.
