Southampton defender Alfie Jones has agreed to join Scottish Premiership club St Mirren on loan for 2018-19. Jones is a graduate of Southampton’s impressive academy and has already made an impact at youth level on the south coast.
He won the club’s Young Player of the Year award in 2016 and was named as captain of the Under-23s, but has been deemed not ready for first-team action at St Mary’s.
The 20-year-old only recently penned a new contract, which runs until 2021, and he will look to get some experience of senior football under his belt this term north of the border.
St Mirren returned to the Scottish top flight this season and Jones, who can play in defence or midfield, will be hoping to help them avoid relegation.
