Saracens Crowned European Champions

Saracens have become the first English side to win three Champions Cups after beating Leinster in Saturday’s final.

Ireland international Tadhg Furlong scored the first try of the match at St James’ Park as Leinster moved into a 10-0 but Sean Maitland’s converted try in first-half injury time ensured the two teams would go in level at the break.

It was a tight affair in the second half but England fly-half Owen Farrell put Saracens into the lead for the first time when slotting over a close-range penalty in the 59th minute, with the score at 10-13.

The crucial moment of the match came in the 68th minute when Billy Vunipola picked the ball up from the back of the scrum before driving through four opponents to touch down over the white line.

Farrell’s successful conversion gave the English outfit a 20-10 advantage and they were able to hold on in the closing stages to secure their third Champions Cup in four years.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, man of the match and Saracens captain Brad Barritt said: “We’ve spoken the last few weeks about being a tough team.

You have to soak up pressure and respond when you get the opportunity. “The whole organisation has been working so hard for this and I’m really pleased we could pull it off today.

Leinster are an unbelievable team with very few weaknesses. We wanted to really throw the kitchen sink at them and not hold back. “The amount of players that have come through our academy and the bonds between everyone in the team have got stronger and stronger.”
