Sarri Unsure Over Rudiger Injury

Maurizio Sarri says he is unsure over the extent of the knee injury picked up by Antonio Rudiger during Chelsea’s loss at Liverpool.

The Germany international was forced off after 40 minutes of Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Anfield following a coming together with Reds forward Sadio Mane and he is set to undergo a scan over the coming days to shed more light on his situation.

Rudiger is certainly a major doubt for the second leg of Chelsea’s Europa League quarter-final tie with Slavia Prague at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, but Sarri has his fingers crossed that the 26-year-old does not face a prolonged spell on the sidelines. “I hope it’s nothing serious but, at the moment, I am not able to say anything,” Sarri told reporters.

“We need another visit with the doctor and something else to be sure it’s not serious. I am not sure.” Andreas Christensen came on as Rudiger’s replacement at Anfield and he is likely to start Thursday’s European showdown, while Gary Cahill could also come back into contention as cover.

The former England international has only featured seven times across all competitions for the Blues this season and he was heavily linked with a move away from the club in January, but he instead opted to stay and fight for his first-team place.
