Schar Reflects On Dropped Points After ‘OK’ Start

Fabian Schar claims Newcastle have had an “OK” start to the new Premier League season, but he feels they should have more points on the board. The 27-year-old has now met up with Switzerland squad for the international break having secured a point for his club with the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Watford at St James’ Park on Saturday.

It leaves the Tynesiders on four points from as many games, but those came from the past two games as the Hornets point came on the back of an impressive 1-0 win at Tottenham.

There was an air of discontent surrounding Newcastle before the new season had even started.
The departure of former boss Rafael Benitez left the fans up in arms and they were incensed when Steve Bruce was drafted in to replace him.
A harsh 1-0 home defeat against Arsenal was followed by a dismal 3-1 drubbing at Norwich on the second weekend.
The knives were already out for Bruce after the Carrow Road surrender, but the win at Spurs managed to get some fans back onside.
The Watford game was somewhere in between the previous two league matches because the first-half performance in particular left a lot to be desired.

However, after Schar cancelled out Will Hughes’ early opener four minutes before half-time, the hosts improved after the break and looked the most likely to win. In the end they had to settle for a point but there is a feeling of improvement under Bruce at least.
And, while he was pleased with his goal, Schar felt Newcastle should have been going into the two-break in a healthier position.

He told NUFC TV: “We are OK after four games, but if we had won this game, it would have been much better, the feeling would have been great when you go into a break with two wins. “Now we have four points, it’s still OK, but we could have had more points – also in the Arsenal game, I think we deserved a point. “But overall, I think we are now in a good way. We have improved in the last two or three weeks after the Norwich game and when we work like this, I’m really positive.”

Newcastle face a daunting trip to leaders Liverpool after the international break on September 14, but will no doubt target their first win on home soil against Brighton the following weekend as they look to try and battle for a mid-table finish at least this season.
