Sharapova Turns To Piatti

Maria Sharapova has turned to Riccardo Piatti in a bid to rescue her dwindling form. The five-time Grand Slam champion has won just 12 matches in 2019 and slumped to a 4-6 6-3 6-4 defeat to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit on Monday at the Rogers Cup.

Sliding out of the top 100 now looks inevitable for the former world number one, who has turned to Piatti to try and resurrect her career. The Italian worked with Novak Djokovic during the Serb’s teenage years and the 32-year-old Sharapova says the pair have been spending time together in a bid to try and find a solution to her form woes. “I spent a few weeks in Europe working with Riccardo Piatti,” she told reporters in Toronto.

“[It] was really nice and just a different perspective from someone that didn’t expect me. I crashed his summer camp. “We all had a great time. I worked really hard, but I felt – really, I felt like I had fun at the end of it, which was really important. “He’ll be at the US Open, which will be nice. He looks after a few kids so we’ll be together there.”
