Rafael Benitez has confirmed Jonjo Shelvey will miss Newcastle United’s clash at Manchester City on Saturday evening. England international Shelvey has missed the last two games – a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League and a 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest – with a thigh injury and the Magpies have missed his range of passing in the heart of midfield.
It was hoped the 26-year-old would have recovered in time for the clash against the defending champions but Benitez has confirmed the midfielder will not be making the trip to the Etihad Stadium.
The Spanish tactician could have some good news ahead of the contest, revealing three first-team players are closing in on a return to full fitness and could feature in Manchester.
“Jamaal was (training) outside,” Benitez was quoted as saying by the Shields Gazette. “I don’t know if Ritchie was outside. (Javier) Manquillo was outside. We have certain players who are injured.
“That happens. For Saturday there are doubts on Ritchie, Jamaal and Manquillo. There’s no chance for Jonjo. Each one is different.”
