Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone feels his side is now on a par with Real Madrid after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo had been the driving force behind Real’s success since he joined the club from Manchester United in 2009, winning La Liga twice while securing four Champions League titles during his stay at the Bernabeu.
However, the Portugal skipper opted to leave for Juventus during the summer having scored an incredible 450 goals for the Spanish giants.
Atletico finished above their city rivals in last season’s La Liga standings and Simeone feels the loss of Ronaldo has levelled the playing field even more.
“From the results we aren’t worse than Madrid or Barca, from the individual characteristics of our players, yes,” he told El Partidazo de COPE. “Without Cristiano we have approached Real Madrid’s level, for sure.”
