Sirotkin Sets Sights On Eventual F1 Return

Sergey Sirotkin says he has high hopes of returning to Formula 1 in the future following his exit from Williams.

Robert Kubica has been brought in by Williams for 2019, forcing Russian Sirotkin to head elsewhere.

The 23-year-old is set to drive for SMP Racing this year in the World Endurance Championship, but he has his eye on an F1 comeback at some point in the future.

“The main target which is probably more of a long-term target now is obviously to come back to the F1 grid,” he told Formula Spy. “It’s still too early to say how easy or how possible that is to achieve but that’s the medium-to-long term target.

“Here, for now, all I know is I will have to do a few races in WEC in LMP1 with the SMP team, probably one which is next month already in the USA so I will have something to drive.

“Then depending on other opportunities and other possible races this probably can be shorter or wider or more diverse. I’m still in quite early points of discussions so it’s not like I know right here right now what I’m doing.”

Sirotkin struggled in his debut F1 campaign last year, claiming a solitary point with a 10th-place finish in Italy in September.

He has other options and could reportedly become a Formula E driver after recently taking part in the Marrakech test after the E-Prix with Mahindra.
