Sloane Stephens beat Kiki Bertens at the WTA Finals, a result that means Naomi Osaka still has a chance to go through.
US Open champion Osaka was on the brink of elimination after losing to Angelique Kerber earlier in the day, but now lives to fight another day thanks to Stephens.
Stephens and Bertens traded breaks throughout the match, but the 25-year-old rallied late to win six of the last seven games against her opponent to eventually win 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-3.
The victory means all four players in the Red Group can still qualify or be eliminated going into the final games, and Osaka, who has lost both matches so far, can still progress if she wins and the other result goes her way.
In Friday’s final round of fixtures, Osaka plays Bertens while Stephens faces Kerber, who has one win from two.
Intriguingly, there is a similar situation in the White Group, in which Elina Svitolina, Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki and Petra Kvitova can all still qualify after two matches.
