Smith Targets WBC Bout

Callum Smith has confirmed he wants to win the WBC super-middleweight title – just days after becoming a world champion. The Liverpudlian won the WBA ‘Super’ crown on Friday night as he produced a devastating stoppage to overcome George Groves.

Smith recorded a seventh-round knockout in Jeddah to win the title and also the final of the World Boxing Super Series.

He now wants to fight for the WBC belt owned by David Benavidez after claiming he has unfinished business with the organisation.

The 28-year-old told Sky Sports: “I want to achieve as much as I can and unification is probably the next goal and next step.

“After beating George Groves, I think I am considered the number one, but they’ve all got arguments to say they are so I just want to clear that up and cement my spot at number one.

“The only way I can do is beat some of the other champions and there’s a bit of unfinished business with the WBC with me.

“I felt I should’ve fought for that belt a long time ago so I want that first. I have the WBC Diamond so I am next in line and it should make it easier to make and I am not picking an easy one.”
