Spalletti Sorry For Inter Showing

Luciano Spalletti apologised to Inter fans for Sunday’s 4-1 loss at Napoli, with Champions League qualification still up in the air. Mauro Icardi’s 81st-minute penalty was all that Inter had to show for their efforts as a brace from Fabian plus goals by Dries Mertens and Piotr Zielinski gave the hosts all three points at San Paolo.

It left the Nerazzurri sitting in fourth place in the Serie A standings – level on 66 points with third-laced Atalanta – but fierce rivals AC Milan are just one point and one place behind. A top-four finish will come down to the final day of the season, with Inter set to host Empoli and Milan away to SPAL.

It remains to be seen what happens or if Spalletti is in charge next season but the 60-year-old tactician feels they should have competed better at the weekend. “I am sorry for the result, as are the players,” he said.

“We could have done more, we started well but we weren’t good enough at dealing with the pressure Napoli put us under. We gave the ball up too much and they scored goals as a result of that. “In the second half we managed to do a little more and made the two strikers work but the gap between the two sides got bigger.”
