Elina Svitolina came from behind to defeat Sloane Stephens to secure the WTA Finals title in Singapore on Sunday. The 24-year-old Ukrainian had never defeated her American opponent on a hard court in previous meetings and it appeared she was heading for another loss when the 2017 US Open champion took control of the first set to go ahead.
Svitolina hit back in the second and broke Stephens to go 3-1 up only for the 25-year-old to respond quickly with a break of her own.
However, the world number seven managed to maintain her advantage to level the tie and then stormed into a 3-0 lead in the decider.
Stephens got it back to 3-2 but Svitolina stepped up another gear to see out a 3-6 6-2 6-2 win.
“It’s definitely a very special moment for me. I know I played great tennis this week and I’m very happy to share this moment with you guys. Definitely, Singapore is going to stay for a very long time in my mind,” Svitolina said afterwards.
“I want to say congratulations to Sloane for a great season. It’s been amazing to play against her here and, of course, I want to thank the crowd.
“Unfortunately, this is the last year that Singapore is hosting this amazing tournament. I’m very sad, but I just want to thank all the fans and the sponsors for making this event amazing. It’s very, very special for everyone.”
