Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco says he is delighted the club have managed to sign Lille left-back Hamza Mendyl. Morocco international Mendyl has put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract and he is set to watch the Royal Blues from the stands for Friday’s DFB Pokal clash away at Schweinfurt.
The 20-year-old, whose transfer fee remains undisclosed, is set to join up with his new team-mates over the weekend and he will be hoping to earn a starting spot for the trip to Wolfsburg on August 25.
Tedesco, who has been in charge since June 2017, has praised the capture of the defender and is confident the new arrival will add good competition for places for many seasons.
“We have been monitoring Hamza for a while now and are very happy to have closed the deal,” he told the club’s official website. “He provides exactly what we want from a left back – athleticism, dynamism, solidity and attacking impetus.
“We are hugely excited to elevate this great talent to the next level.”
