Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles has hailed Rafa Benitez and thanked the Spanish tactician for improving his game. Lascelles has always had bags of potential but has only really started to show it since Benitez took over at St James’ Park, and is now regarded as one of the best young defenders in England.
The 24-year-old is now skipper of the Magpies side and is also on the cusp of a call up to the England squad, and Lascelles puts that down to Benitez’s coaching.
“He’s always correcting small things with me and talking to me,” Lascelles revealed to Four Four Two. “He will tell me to watch clips of various players to improve my game.
“He’s by far the best manager I’ve worked with – he’s very easy to talk to and his door is always open.
“You can tell he’s managed at the highest level, and every day it’s like playing in front of a new manager because he has authority and commands respect immediately.
“Players want to impress him in training because of his stature and what he’s achieved during his career.”
