According to senior club sources, Old Trafford chiefs will be forced to pay Jose Mourinho £15m if they do decide to sack him. The Manchester United manager is coming under intense pressure as the new season threatens to unravel before the clocks turn back, losing twice in the opening three games.
Mourinho offered a bizarre defence of his managerial credentials in the aftermath of Monday’s comprehensive 3-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur, reminding people of the three Premier League titles he led Chelsea to during his two separate stints at the club.
The simmering tension between him and United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is also understood to be reaching boiling point, with the Portuguese tactician having been irked at missing out on his preferred summer transfer targets.
United insiders, though, have pointed out that when Mourinho signed his contract extension earlier this year, his agent Jorge Mendes was also able to negotiate a clause which means United agreed to pay up a year’s salary, which equates to £15m, should the board decide to show him the exit door before the summer of 2019.
The Red Devils must also factor in a further £5m for members of his backroom, with any new manager more than likely to want to bring in his own staff.
Mourinho has certainly protected himself at his previous jobs, walking away with around £30m from his spells at Stamford Bridge, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
