Toby Alderweireld insists he did not push for a move to Manchester United, while Jerome Boateng has also revealed he rejected the Reds. United boss Jose Mourinho had both players, along with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire on his wanted list, but for one reason or another the club could not get any of the deals over the line.
Belgium centre-back Alderweireld has less than a year remaining on his current contract, with an option for a one-year extension that includes a £25m release clause.
United were interested in signing Alderweireld in the summer, but the player says he is happy with Spurs.
“Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham,” Alderweireld said. “That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. To be in the first team again is a victory for me.”
Meanwhile, Boateng was also a top target, but the defender says it was not the right move as he opted to stay with Bayern Munich.
“I had enquiries from PSG and Manchester United,” Boateng told Bild. “I did not want just to get away from Bayern, but I was thrilled to try a new challenge.
“I feel well at Bayern. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. I called Jose Mourinho, I told him that his interest was an honor for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me.”
