Sauber team boss Fred Vasseur says Stoffel Vandoorne will not be in contention to drive for the team in 2019. The Belgian is currently fighting for his place with McLaren for next season after Carlos Sainz was announced as Fernando Alonso’s repacement last week.
Even though Alonso will leave after announcing his retirement from the sport, Vandoorne’s place is still under jeopardy at the Woking-based marque.
Sauber may seem like the obvious team for Vandoorne to go to, given that he is managed by Alessandro Alunni Bravi, a director behind the company that owns the Swiss team, but the switch has been ruled out by Vasseur, who is in no rush to declare his 2019 driver line-up.
“He’s not in the discussions,” the Frenchman told Motorsport.com. “Honestly we are in the middle of the season.
“And even if everybody is a bit upset and a bit nervous on the drivers’ market, if you compare with previous years, I think everybody is much earlier. So we stay calm.”
