Former New Zealand international Manu Vatuvei has confirmed he has been forced to retire from rugby league. A brain cyst has ended his prospects of a future boxing career and now the ex-winger has confirmed he has played his last game of rugby league.

The 33-year-old enjoyed 14 seasons with the New Zealand Warriors before making a high-profile switch to Super League side Salford Red Devils. Playing against St Helens in 2017, before a serious Achilles injury cut short his time at Salford, proved to be Vatuveu’s final game.

“I wasn’t ready to or accept that my time is up and can honestly say it’s been the tough and now I’m ready to accept and announce my retirement,” he wrote on Instagram. “Haven’t got much to say right now but just like to thank everyone that has supported me through my career.. to all The Fans thank you for always supporting me and all the kind messages over the years I will always remember them and cherish it for the rest of my life.”
