David Wagner has praised the “warrior” mentality of Terence Kongolo after his impressive return to the Town side on Monday. The Netherlands international played the full 90 minutes of Town’s 1-0 win over Fulham, despite not having featured for the previous five weeks as he struggled with an injury.
But Wagner had no doubt that the 24-year-old, signed permanently from Monaco last summer, would pull through and prove to be a rock at the back as the Terriers claimed their first Premier League win of the season. “He is a warrior, a real warrior,” said Wagner. “This is what I loved from the first second we signed him and why I was so keen on making him permanent.
Once he puts the shirt on and steps on the grass he is a different character to what he is off it.” Kongolo admitted that he was feeling the pace of the game in his legs in the closing stages but never considered coming off as Town led on for a vital three points.
“It was a long time that I didn’t play,” he told reporters on Friday. “To play 90 minutes on Monday was very hard, but I am trying my best and at the end of the day we got the points. I was tired but happy.”
