Webb Resigned To Missing Out

Rhys Webb accepts that he won’t be involved in Wales’ World Cup campaign later this year unless injuries strike.

The 30-year-old elected to leave Ospreys to join French Top 14 side Toulon ahead of the 2018-19 season, penning a three-year deal.

But his decision to move over

seas prevents him from being selected for international duty and has subsequently stopped him from being involved in the World Cup.

The Welsh Rugby Union only allows overseas players to be considered for selection if they have picked up 60 caps.

Webb only has 33 caps to his name and accepts that he will only be afforded a chance to feature at the showpiece event in Japan if injuries hit in the number nine position. “As far as I’m concerned, I’m out of bounds with the 60-cap rule,” said Webb. “I do believe that if there are injuries then I can come in without issue, but there has to be injuries.

That’s the ruling. “Maybe it will happen one day, but for now it’s a no-go. Every time I play for Toulon, I don’t think about playing for Wales. “The rule is in place and it motivates me to work harder and keep doing extras.

I know my standard, I know where I belong as a player. I’ll maintain high standards wherever I am.”
