Werder Youngster Pens Fresh Terms

Werder Bremen midfielder Niklas Schmidt has signed a new deal and will head out on a two-season loan deal to VfL Osnabruck. The midfielder is a graduate of Werder’s academy and earned his senior debut from the bench against Wolfsburg in September 2016.

But the 21-year-old has been unable to tie down a place and spent last season on-loan with FC Wiesbaden, scoring eight times in 40 appearances. Werder clearly feel Schmidt has plenty to offer in the future and have therefore handed him a new deal, although the Bundesliga side believe he needs further time to develop.

Schmidt will get that opportunity over the next two seasons with Bundesliga 2. side Osnabruck. “Niklas’ season has shown how successful a loan deal can be for all parties,” Director of sport Frank Baumann told Werder Bremen’s official website. “Niklas picked up a lot of game time and made an important step in professional football.”
