Serena Williams has been fined a total of $17,000 for her outbursts in the heated US Open final defeat to Naomi Osaka.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was furious on court and smashed her racket after being given a warning for receiving coaching from the stands before she then went on to verbally abuse the umpire Carlos Ramos.
After the initial warning for coaching, the US star was penalised a point for a second offence of smashing her racket and was then docked a game for hitting out at Ramos, who she allegedly called a liar and a thief, as she ended up on the end of a 6-2 6-4 defeat against the rising Japanese star at Flushing Meadows.
The verbal abuse offence made up the most of the hefty fine, covering $10,000 of the $17,000 total, with the remainder of being $4,000 for coaching and $3,000 for racket abuse.11 BUSINESS NUGGETS FROM SUPER EAGLES BRONZE MEDAL TRIUMPH.
