Williams Through In Melbourne

Serena Williams has moved into the second round of the Australian Open with a comfortable win over Tatjana Maria. The 37-year-old has fond memories of the event after she won her 23rd Grand Slam while pregnant two years ago, and is now keen to notch number 24 in Melbourne.

That would equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 and the tournament has started well with a 6-0 6-2 win over Maria on Rod Laver Arena. “I have so many good memories of the last time I was here,” said Williams. “It was literally the best win of my career, so it’s just good to get back. I’m glad that I was able to come out and do what I needed to do. “The last time I was here I was pregnant and playing at the same time, so it’s kind of weird walking back on by myself this time.”
The number 16 seed will now face either Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard or Peng Shuai of China in the second round.
