Williams Set To Compete In Rome

Serena Williams will return to action at the Italian Open, according to tournament organisers.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion has been absent from the WTA since the Miami Open, having withdrawn ahead of her third-round match there due to a knee injury.

Williams appears on course for her first appearance in Rome since 2016, however, as tournament director Sergio Palmieri has told the Associated Press she has reserved her rooms and he expects her to arrive in Italy “a few days early”.

The 37-year-old, who is currently ranked as the world number 11, is a four-time Italian Open champion and landed the title in her last appearance three years ago. The American star will be bidding to rediscover her form ahead of the next Grand Slam event in Paris as she seeks a fourth French Open title.
