Wolff Storms Into 3M Contention

Matthew Wolff has moved into a share of the lead at the inaugural 3M Open following a third-round score of 62 on Saturday.

The 20-year-old is making just his third start on the PGA Tour since turning professional last month, but he certainly doesn’t look out of place, as he produced 10 birdies and just one dropped shot during his third round to move onto 15-under-par for the tournament.

At one stage the Californian had looked on course for a sub-60 course after registering six consecutive birdies from the fifth, but he only picked up two more shots over the following six holes before dropping his only shot of the day at the 17th.

Wolff is joined at the top of the leaderboard by another rookie in Collin Morikawa and he feels both players will have to keep a lid on their emotions if they are to remain in contention on Sunday.

“It’s on a lot bigger stage, but our games played very well throughout the spring,” Wolff said. “We’re going to have to control our nerves, remember who we are, what brought us out here.

These guys are really good, and I know I’m really good, so it’s going to be fun.” Bryson DeChambeau is the third man holding a share of the lead, but he saw his two-shot overnight advantage wiped out, as he had to be content with a one-under-par score of 70.

It is anyone’s guess who will come out on top during Sunday’s final round at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota as no less than 13 players will start the day within three shots of the lead, including Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and two-time PGA Tour winner Troy Merritt.
