The Dane then informed the umpire that she was unable to continue due to a leg problem, meaning her US opponent will now take on Spanish star Garbine Muguruza in the second round.
Huge doubts now surround the fitness of Wozniacki ahead of the French Open, which starts on May 26, as this is the second straight tournament she has been forced to withdraw from early. The 28-year-old was trailing 3-0 against Alize Cornet in the opening round of the Madrid Open earlier this month and had to pull out because of a troublesome back injury.
