Nigeria’s Funke Oshonaike and Aruna Quadri have crashed out of women’s singles and men’s singles events of the 2017 ITTF Challenge Seamaster Nigeria Open in Lagos, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Oshonaike who beat defeated Celia Baah-Danso 4-2 (11-13, 11-13, 11-5, 14-12, 11-8, 11-5) in the round of 16 of the women’s singles event succumbed to a 4-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5, 17-15) defeat in the hands of Piccolin Giorgia who had earlier dumped out Esther Oribamise on Friday in the U-21 women’s singles event.
Also exiting from the round of 16 were Fatima Kazeem and Cecila Akpan. Kazeem lost to India’s Mallika Bhandarkar in four straight sets (11-4, 11-2, 11-9, 11-3), while Cecila Akpan was beaten 4-1 (11-4, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-4) by Hungary’s Bernadett Balint.
Bode Abiodun beat Nigeria’s top ranked male table tennis player Quadri 4-2 (9-11,11-7,5-11,10-12,11-9, 11-9) to set up a quarter-final clash against India’s Sanil Shetty who also overcame Onaolapo Ojo in four sets (11-6,11-7,11-9,11,9).
In another result, Dina Meshref completed a double over her compatriot Farah Abdel-Aziz in four straight sets (12-10, 11-3, 12-10, 11-9).
