Iwobi Earns Emery Praise In Arsenal’s Defeat To Liverpool

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has singled out Alex Iwobi and Maitland-Niles for praise in his side 5-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Iwobi completed his first 90 minutes in December and also provided an assist for Nile’s 11th minute opener in the defeat.

Arsenal’s goal sparked the hosts into life, as they took the lead within five minutes, through a Roberto Firmino brace.

Sadio Mane connected with Mohammed Salah’s touch-down to make it 3-1, before Salah converted from the spot in added time of the first half.

Firmino rounded off scoring in the 65th minute from the penalty spot.

“There were some positives, Ainsley played as right winger and scored. Iwobi, after some matches not playing very well, he played 90minutes with a good performance,” Emery told reporters after the game.

The Spanish manager whose side is without a win in his last three games also blamed his defence for the defeat.

“But defensively we need to be stronger, to work.”

“Our defensive moments in our box, it’s my responsibility.”

Demands from Arsenal fans are putting a lot of pressure on this boy. He hardly plays with freedom. He’s under a constant barrage of emotions while in Arsenal shirt. He thinks of what fans would say than what he can do. This isn’t so with the national team. He expresses himself well and focuses more on what his legs can do. But his talent is precocious. I pray he overcomes his phobia for fans as the years roll by because he’s got the talent.

    Wide Midfield

    RM, Arsenal
Man of the Match. Well, let it not be said that nothing good (or at least nothing not bad) came out of this match. Because Ainsley Maitland-Niles, playing as a right-sided central midfielder, was quite good. The goal obviously bolsters his stock a bit, but even outside of that, he was as solid as you could ask him to be. He was making those vital runs into the box, he was one of the few players who didn’t look to be drowning in the pressures of the match.

    LM, Arsenal
The other clearly positive performer in this one. His attacking moves were a threat throughout the match, no matter how out of hand it got.

Credit to him, because I know a lot of people, myself included, were asking before the match how he keeps getting starts. Well, if he can play like this against Liverpool while his team is being mown down like a lawn, then he deserves some consideration. Well done to him. Shame it couldn’t have meant more.”

Josh, I don’t expect you to read my post on this site but I will answer your question.

You said, and I quote :” I know a lot of people, myself included, were asking before the match how he keeps getting starts”.

He keeps getting starts because he is that good, Mr Sippie!

Emery is the coach, not you, sir!

I wonder why he dislikes Iwobi. Even when congratulating him for a job well done, he finds a way to chip in some negativity. Does it have anything to do with iwobi’s nationality?

  • It’s strange what gripe English fans have with Iwobi, but it’s not pretty. I remember reading comments on BBC after the pre-World Cup England/Nigeria friendly last June, and one fan said something to the effect that he can’t believe it was Arsenal’s worst player that scored against them.

Yes, sometimes Iwobi can be inconsistent and have off-days but he’s always a handful to the opponents when he’s in his elements. He’s still young and developing and has a lot of pressures on his shoulders already. Besides playing in an attacking midfield role for a top EPL team, he’s also playing alongside world class players and former World Cup winners. He’s African top team, Nigeria’s number 10 and also has an uncle with a legendary boot side to try to fill. All of these are enough pressures already. Common, English fans! Back off!

English fans dislike him because he has a British passport, but plays for Nigeria.

I saw the ratings in Daily Mail where he was rated 7 (the second highest in the match day squad). The guy is good, the best Nigerian footballer out there at the moment. If he wasn’t that good, the new coach would have given him the Victor Moses treatment.

I don’t read much into Arsenal and English fans comments. Most of them are terrible humans awashed with sports betting. When they lost money because they put a lot of money on betting that’s when they start getting furious with the players. Especially foreign players. When Salah was having a bad start to the season a lot of Liverpool fans turned against him. There was a time he didn’t celebrate after scoring a goal when he began to find form again. Iwobi is still a very young player and the burden placed on him by the fans is a real problem. As world class as Ozil is, he’s not playing better than Alexander the Great this season. Infact only Aubameyang and Lucas Torera IMHO can claim to be better than Iwobi so far this season in an Arsenal shirt. 2 goals and about 5 or 6 assists halfway through the seasons is quite commendable.

Many English fans regret the loss of Iwobi to Nigeria, which is why they attack him out of spite. On a good day, Iwobi is a joy to watch, just like his uncle was. A real bobby dazzler! Bad belle fans can talk rubbish all they want. As long as Iwobi keeps his head down and continues to put in the hard work, he will be ok.
