Iwobi: I’m Ready To Be More Professional, Face Arsenal Challenge Without Wenger

Nigeria winger, Alex Iwobi admits he has to be more professional and prove himself under new boss Unai Emery after sparking fury from fans last season.

Iwobi has agreed a five-year contract with Arsenal and knows he has a lot still left to do.

He was snapped at a wild drug-fuelled house party in January — just a day before the Gunners’ woeful 4-2 FA Cup third-round defeat to Championship club Nottingham Forest.

Then-manager Arsene Wenger slammed his antics as “unacceptable” and promised to fine him.

However, Wenger refused to axe him, despite angry supporters branding the player a “waste of space”, an “idiot” and calling for him to be sacked.

Now, as Iwobi prepares for the new season under Wenger’s Spanish successor, he has spoken about the incident for the first time.

“I received deserved criticism, of course. I have to be more professional,” he told The Sun.

“I am not this young boy any more as I have been in the Premier League for three seasons now, so the expectations are always going to grow the older you get.

“I have to be professional and knuckle down, and not let any distraction affect me.”

Iwobi has been at Arsenal since he was nine and, until now, has only known Wenger as the boss.

“It’s going to be a bit strange at first, because all my Arsenal life has been about Arsene Wenger,” he added.

“But I look forward to the new challenge. Growing up I played in several positions.

“I’ve played as a striker, on the wing, as No 10 and all across midfield, but my favourite position is central midfield.

“That’s where I feel most comfortable, but if I am told to play in any position I will be happy.”

  • I’m so fed up Reading about Iwobi. Strugling to understand why Unai Emery would spend so much time and effort on him. Evan Wenger slammed his antics as “unacceptable” For me he is a “waste of space”, and should of been sacked.

  • @Graham Benbow what is your own? Do you know Iwobi before now? What are his offence against you? Is he owing you some money? If it is money, take him to court. Your name does not look Nigerian so I assume you are English. If your ex-wife is Iwobi’s present girlfriend and you have not divorced her, take him to court and claim damages. If your ex-girlfriend is Iwobi’s present girlfriend, my friend grow up and move on. You are only harming yourself if you think you can come on the pages of newspaper to damage his reputation. Nigerians love Alex Iwobi and from the look of things, the Arsenal management love him too for his being a symbol of the Arsenal Academy graduate who is doing well. In reality you do not know Alex Iwobi at all. For his age and experience, he is doing extremely well. Alex Iwobi can play for almost 98% of any club in the world. Iwobi is worth 30-50 million dollars. So he is just not an average player, he is a world class player. So stop harassing him and wanting to pull him down (PHD). You will only be wasting your time.

Watching Iwobi’s exploit for arsenal in the pre-season games only shows that he will be a lethal weapon for Unai Emery this season. Nigerians love Iwobi cuz he’s our future and he’s a lad ready to learn.
