By Johnny Edward: Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi made his 15th English Premier League start of the season for Arsenal who avoided a fourth straight defeat by beating Watford 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
The game also saw Petr Cech keep his 200th English Premier League clean sheet.
The Gunners had previously lost their last three games to Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Brighton in the EPL but raced out of the blocks to outclass the Hornets in front of a scanty crowd at the Emirates Stadium.
Shkodran Mustafi, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Henrik Mkhitaryan all got on the score sheet to secure the win for Arsene Wenger’s team.
Mustafi headed in Mesut Ozil’s free-kick in the eighth minute after Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was fouled.
Iwobi had three shots at goal to end his five-game goa. drought but failed to take score.
Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan also had scoring chances in the first half but were both denied by the heroics of Otestis Karnezis in goal for Watford.
Aubameyang made it 2-0 for Arsenal 14 minutes into the second half with a left-footed shot.
Watford had a chance to score a goal from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after Maitland Niles fouled Roberto Pereyara in the box but captain Troy Deeney’s penalty was saved by Petr Cech.
Iwobi was subbed off for Danny Welbeck in the 66th minute in his 19th appearance of the season (15 starts four substitute).
Mkhitaryan sealed the game with a with a left footed shot in the 77th minute.
The 3-0 win ended Arsenal’s 11-match run without a clean sheet but left them still sixth in the table with 48 points, eight points off fifth-placed Chelsea and 10 off Tottenham Hotspur who occupy the last Champions League spot and are in action against Bournemouth later on Sunday.
